The continuing bailouts of the various mortgage and financial companies is actually an example of very high level corporate welfare. I understand that these measures have become necessary in order to save the entire economy, but I am appalled that our nation has come to such a state. Businesses have demanded and received de-regulation. But if they refuse to follow rules and regulations then they can not expect to be rescued when they try schemes and scams, illegal and unethical activities, "creative" economic maneuvers, and "creative" accounting.
Unfortunately, it has become necessary to rescue some companies in order to save what is left of our economy. Therefore, regulations need to be put in place to prevent future activities of this nature. We taxpayers cannot afford this bailout, let alone future bailouts. We cannot allow various predatory individuals to destroy all of us. After Enron and World Com one would think that we would have learned that we have to regulate these people. But they have powerful lobbies and basically own both parties. That means that our country is now owned and controlled by Big Business. They will do with us whatever they want. In the end this will be total destruction of most of us.
The CEOs of these companies manage to do extremely well for themselves whether they succeed of fail in their business ventures. They then bail out with golden parachutes leaving the rest of us holding the bag. Actually this is what pure capitalism is all about. Certain people at the top destroy everyone else and take everything for themselves. Unregulated capitalism is evil. That was proved following the industrial revolution when people worked endless days for wages that did not begin to support their families. That resulted in child labor; children had to support themselves. Now we are back to child labor, slave labor, and wages that do not support a family at the Kosher meatpacking plant that was raided by the federal government. (Agriprocessors Inc. in Postville, Iowa, acc. to NY Times, 7/27/2008). It is true that these people who were so taken advantage of were illegal immigrants, but we can see that this is the kind of system that businesses really want.
Capitalism has to be controlled soon. Strangely people seem to think that God wants America to be a capitalist economy. How bizarre! Does God really want people treated as slaves? Does God want people living in poverty so that CEOs can have exorbitant wealth? Big Business and certain religious leaders promote this thinking. For example: "God wants you to be exorbitantly wealthy too, and allowing business free reign is the only way that we can all become rich." I fear that this nation of the people, by the people, and for the people may soon perish from the earth.
