THE SECOND AMENDMENT

Gun supporters are clinging to their Second Amendment rights with great fear that their rights will be taken away.  They are correct to fear the loss of the Second Amendment rights.  It is beyond my comprehension why the Supreme Court defended the present day interpretation of the Second Amendment.  "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."  This statement is absurd in modern day America.  Americans in the Twenty-first Century have the National Guard in every state and the largest and most powerful federal army that the world has ever known.

In colonial times the men who were called to serve were expected to provide their own arms.  That is no longer expected.  The states and the federal government provide an incredible array of weapons.  Our "founding fathers" would go into shock if they could see our weapons today.  We have well regulated militias (the National Guard, the Army, Marines, Navy, and Air Force.  No one is expected to supply personal weapons to equal the weapons already supplied.

What the Second Amendment supporters really want is weapons to protect themselves FROM the state and the federal government.  This is also absurd because they could not hope to actually fight off the state or the federal government.  And the idea that they will have to fight off the state or the federal government is a sign of their mental illness.  The fact that they are opposed to background checks is also a sign of their mental illness.  They are afraid that they will be the ones who are not able to pass a background check.  The majority of Americans want background checks required for the purchase of guns.

It is the BIG money of the weapon's manufacturers that is fighting gun control.  They will lose money if every nut case is unable to buy a gun.  As Rachel Maddow pointed out, the gun industry resembles the tobacco industry in fighting tooth and nail for their profits.  They do not care how many people they kill.  The money is what is important.  The tobacco industry eventually lost, and the American people must continue to fight until we achieve rational gun laws.  The Second Amendment has no relevance to modern life.  When we value guns over the lives of school children, we are mentally ill.
