The Republican Party is in the process of bringing us the new America, the Corporate America. We think of America as a nation of the people, by the people, and for the people. The Republicans have been working for decades to change that. First they worked on packing the Supreme Court with people who agreed with their ideology. Then the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are people. In that sense a nation of the people, by the people, and for the people is the same as a nation "of the Corporations, by the Corporations and for the Corporations." The Republicans realized that the best time to seize control and achieve the destruction of many of the programs for the people would be to "starve the beast." That became the motto of George Bush long before he was elected. He promised to starve the beast. He proceeded to accomplish that goal by starting two wars and cutting taxes. When he took office the budget was balanced and the economy was doing well. He created tremendous deficits with his wars and tax cuts. Not one Republican said one word about the deficit spending. The wars were never put in the budget. Their cost was simply set aside for future payment by future generations. Then he took a chain- saw to the regulations on Wall Street and banks. Chainsaw was the word the de-regulators used. This resulted in the destruction of the entire world economy by Wall Street. We are now struggling to pull out of the worst depression since 1929.
When Barack Obama was elected President the stage had been set for the Republicans to begin their tirade about deficit spending. He was being forced to pay off the two wars and balance the budget without any tax money. The Republicans don't believe in taxes. They simply borrow and spend. They called the Democratic Party the "tax and spend" party. But the Republican "borrow and spend" party did a great deal more damage to the US economy.
Now the Republicans are ready for the Corporate America. Mitt Romney is the Corporate CEO. He points out over and over, that he is uniquely qualified to run the country. That is especially true if we are converting America into a Corporation. He is very pleased with the Ryan budget. It is the one he will us when he is elected. It will do away with Medicare and Medicaid. People will be "free to used their own resources" for their medical care. In other words, they will be free to die. Medicare is "socialism." "We" don't approve of socialism, even though 75 percent of Americans approve of Medicare, the Corporation does not choose to continue the program. They can use their money for other purposes. Money is no longer trickling down from the rich. All the money is trickling UP. In the past three decades, the salaries of the poor and middle class have been falling, whereas the incomes of the rich are becoming even greater. One percent of the population controls almost all of the wealth. And that is not going to change if the Republican Party gets its way. What will the "people" (read peons) get when Romney is elected? The labor unions will be done away with. They are not good for corporations. They are only good for people. State governments may choose to take over cities that are not doing well, as Michigan has done. The elected city officials are simply put out by the state. Public education will be ended. We don't like "government education," as Rick Santorum said. Free public education for all children is what made America great. It gave the poor a chance to get an education and to move up in the world. No more. We want private schools and charter schools. The poor may not get any education at all. The poor will have no health care. When people retire they will join the ranks of the poor. American democracy is as good as dead. America is becoming an oligarchy.
