About a month ago we thought that Hurricane Ike was headed for Florida. We put up our storm shutters and considered making plans to evacuate. Then Ike turned south and looked like it might hit the keys and Cuba. It ended up missing even the keys and hit Cuba directly. Then it headed into the gulf and aimed for Galveston and Houston. After the Texas hit, Ike headed north and I knew it would go through Ohio and probably give Ohio some rain. A few days later my daughter in Columbus called and told us that they had been hit by Ike. They had no rain whatsoever, but had hurricane force winds. That was the first time in recorded history that Ohio had had a hurricane! Trees were down all over the city and the power was out for 600,000 people in Ohio. Everyone was quite impressed by the force of Ike. The roof of one school in Gahanna (east of Columbus) was blown off. All Columbus schools were closed for three days. After three days power was still off in many places, but they decided to resume school anyway. In some areas they held school in churches. We had lived in Columbus more that forty years and had never dreamed of a hurricane. Now that we are in Florida we are prepared for hurricanes, but we were stunned by one in Columbus. Of course, tornadoes have passed through the Columbus area, but never hurricanes.
Ike also hit northern Kentucky and many power lines were down there. School was cancelled for a week in Louisville. A man from Vero Beach, FL, who worked for the power company here went to Kentucky to help out. Unfortunately he was electrocuted. Such a sad irony that he died from a Hurricane in Kentucky, when he lived in Florida where hurricanes would be more expected.
