Subsidizing corporations is not capitalism. Yet everyone claims that America is a capitalist nation.
What corporations do we subsidize?
1. Nuclear power. The nuclear power industry cannot afford to deal with a melt-down; so we, the taxpayers are already obligated to pay for any disasters. And we must also pay for any accidents in any future nuclear power plants that will be built. Personally, I cannot afford to pay for a nuclear disaster.
2. The Oil Industry. The oil industries continue to spill oil and pollute our waters, but we continue to subsidize them. Congress continues the subsidies even the oil companies are making millions and have no need whatsoever for subsidies.
3. Corporate Farms. These farms are creating antibiotic resistance, and antibiotic resistant bacteria by feeding antibiotics to cattle, hogs, and chickens. Thousands of people have already died from antibiotic resistant bacteria and thousands more die every year. Yet the FDA refuses to do anything about it. My niece came close to death a few years ago due to antibiotic resistant bacteria. The only recourse we have is to refuse to buy meats from animals which been raised on antibiotics. We need a mass protest. If everyone refused to buy the meat, that might put an end to the practice of raising animals on antibiotics.
4. The Sugar Industry is subsidized by the government and in return it is destroying the Florida Everglades and the Indian River on the East coast of Florida.
5. The Railroads. Railroads have not been able to make a profit and must be subsidized even though we really would be better off using trains than cars. But Americans prefer cars.
I'm sure that there are many other examples. The subsidies are not helping the American people. In fact, most of these subsidies are detrimental to our lives. Why do we continue them? This is not capitalism.
