Tom Friedman had an editorial in the New York Times October 8, 2008, about Palin's statement that she has always been in the middle class and she does not view paying taxes as patriotic. Of course she views the war in Iraq as patriotic, but she has no way of paying for it without taxes. She has no way of buying armor to protect her son in Iraq without tax money as Friedman pointed out. Every one should read Friedman's column. One quote he uses is from Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes: "I like paying taxes. With them I buy civilization."
Unfortunately our Republican candidates do not want civilization. They want to carry guns and shoot anyone who gets in their way, just like in the old West. They don't believe in education. They consider educated and/or intelligent people to be "elitist" and do not want to associate with them or consult them. They don't need intelligent advice to run the government. They will just do whatever sounds good to them. This has also been George Bush's approach, and look where we are! This country is in crisis. We desperately need intelligent and educated people right now to help run the show. We have serious problems with our war. We have a financial meltdown.
We have serious debt. Republicans keep repeating the old mantra, "tax and spend democrats". Well I for one think that is more responsible than BORROW AND SPEND REPUBLICANS!
Our present administration doesn't believe in science, education, birth control, women's rights, environmental protection, protection of Americans from contaminated food and drugs, clean water, clean air, or any other aspects of civilization. Of course they don't believe in taxes. They don't want civilization. It is a sad day for the American people.
